Grand Strand Health limits hospital visitation due to RSV season
Myrtle Beach, S.C. — In response to rising cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other respiratory illnesses in the community, Grand Strand Health is temporarily adjusting its visitation policy to help protect patients, visitors and staff. Effective Wednesday, Nov. 5, no visitors under the age of 12 will be permitted in the hospital.
“RSV and other respiratory viruses can cause serious illness, particularly for young children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems,” said Dr. George Helmrich, Chief Medical Officer at Grand Strand Health. “These temporary measures are in place to reduce the risk of spreading infection within the hospital and ensure the safest possible environment for our patients.”
RSV is a common respiratory virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can lead to more severe illness in infants, young children and older adults. The virus spreads easily through coughs, sneezes and contact with contaminated surfaces.
Grand Strand Health encourages community members to help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses by practicing good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and staying home if you feel unwell.
The hospital will continue to monitor respiratory illness activity in the region and adjust visitation guidelines as necessary.
“While we understand these restrictions may cause inconvenience, our top priority remains the health and safety of our patients, visitors and team members,” added Dr. George Helmrich.
